I direct the MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Maryland. I direct The Studio for Literary Technology and am affiliate faculty in the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland.
My work sits at the center of literature and technology — running the MFA program, building the Studio, and shaping the field beyond Maryland.
With Nick Montfort, I co-edited Output: An Anthology of Computer-Generated Text, 1953–2023 (MIT Press), gathering seventy years of computer-generated writing, from 1953 to 2023. I've also guest-edited a special issue of Michigan Quarterly Review on computational writing and co-edited The Joy of Electronic Literature.
I teach emerging writers to work with computational tools and language models without being worked by them — to use these systems deliberately, refuse them deliberately, and know the difference.

I currently teach at the University of Maryland College Park.
I have previously taught at Northeastern University, UMASS Boston, St. Lawrence University, Ithaca College, and Williams College.
I have taught workshops for The Chautauqua Institution, The Walnut School, The Groton School, The School for Poetic Computation, Just Buffalo, The Shipman Agency, and more. Twice faculty at Banff Centre for the Creative Arts as computational writing program faculty.
